Weather-Wise Watering

backflow with shut off valves

Truckee Meadows Water Authority, serving Reno, Sparks and the greater Truckee Meadows area encourages Weather-Wise Watering, here’s how it works:

Weather-Wise Watering works to mimic Mother Nature, watering only what your yard needs while avoiding water waste. Running the sprinklers every other day under the Assigned-Day Watering schedule is the best way to keep your turf healthy while keeping your water bill low.

Assigned-Day watering only applies to your sprinklers. Run them when it’s cool and not windy, usually early in the morning. Turn sprinklers off when it’s raining.

Water Weather-Wisely on your assigned days. If the last number of your home or business address is:

Even (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8), run the sprinklers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
Odd (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9), run the sprinklers on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Shut your sprinklers off between noon and 6 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day
Also, give your sprinklers a rest on Mondays, as it is a day to replenish and maintain our water system

Drip systems and hand watering of trees, shrubs, flower beds and vegetable gardens are permitted any day of the week. Please use an automatic shut-off nozzle when using a hose.

Outdoor watering increases water use of the average residential customer by four to 10 times during the summer and Assigned-Day watering helps level off peak days.
Use the “Water & Wait” Method with Sprinkler Systems

On your watering days, water until puddles form, then stop and wait for the water to soak in, about 1-2 hours. Repeat until water reaches 6-8 inches deep, which you can determine by easily pushing a screwdriver into the soil.
Water Deep and Less Often with Drip Systems

Hand watering or running drip systems to irrigate flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, trees and shrubs is permitted any day of the week.
